Linux
Saturday, January 3, 2009
To kick off 2009, I decided to give Linux a try. After installing Ubuntu on to my hard drive, I started to explore the features. It took a while for me to get adjusted to the interface, but now that I am starting to get the hang of it, I'm beginning to grow an affinity for it. How can I not? It comes with all the bare necessities required to create and edit documents (OpenOffice.org), view multimedia, browse the internet, and instant message.
Also, I don't know how to explain it, but everything feels "crisp," as if I just purchased a new computer. There are no delays or unexpected freezes between opening applications. I don't have to CTRL+ALT+DEL and click on the Processes tab to fish for third-party applications that I do not want running and using up my memory.
Overall, I feel a whole lot less restricted, and I am looking forward to exploring the freedom I have with this OS a lot further. I toyed around with the Terminal as well and felt like a 1337 hacker although the only commands I know are "ls" and "cd." It reminds me of the days I used to fiddle around with DOS in elementary school. I'm looking forward to taking the Linux course at CMU this upcoming semester.
